About the course
Using the remarkable collections at the National Museum of Scotland you will explore colour in science and nature. By focusing on topics such as camouflage and attraction, you will uncover the scientific principles behind different colours and consider the ongoing influence of colour in nature.
You will discover how colours found in nature have historically inspired creative individuals and continue to do so today. Additionally, you will investigate how scientific advancements help us better understand our surroundings, with colour serving as a key element in this exploration.
Please note that you will be required to move between exhibits at the National Museum. The venue is fully wheelchair accessible.
Any essential or recommended reading will be shared by the course teacher once the course is confirmed to run.
What you'll learn
If you have fully engaged with all the learning activities and have attended regularly, by the end of the course you should be able to:
- Appreciate the history and relevance of colours/natural pigments within the environment;
- Understand and be able to articulate colour theory, using appropriate terminology effectively;
- Show an awareness of the production and application of various pigments, which is essential in fields such as art, design, and manufacturing.

No prior knowledge is required, making this course accessible to all with an interest in art history.We welcome all and are committed to fostering a positive culture and sense of community among learners and staff. We expect learners to treat others with dignity and respect. Learners must be 16+.

Entry criteria
The course is suitable for those with no prior experience of university study.
Please note that you will be required to move between exhibits at the National Museum. The venue is fully wheelchair accessible.You will need to have reading, listening and communication skills, including the ability to understand detailed ideas and information presented verbally and in writing. You must be comfortable learning in English if it is not your first language. You will need basic digital skills, such as using a computer and navigating a website, to access the learning materials.
