About the course
Through the creative shaping of everyday objects—where beauty, function and meaning intersect—this course explores the decorative arts collections of the National Museum of Scotland.
You will study the historical development of finely crafted objects and consider how they reflect the cultures, values and ideas of the societies that produced them, as well as their influence on modern artistic practice. You will examine artists’ sources, ideas and inspirations across a wide range of materials, including clay, glass, metalwork and furniture from around the world and throughout history.
The course also explores how belief systems, industry, trade and technology have shaped decorative art.
You will be required to walk between exhibits in the museum. Portable seats are available for learners.
