About the course
This course looks at the role gender and sexuality play in literature and culture.
You will read a selection of texts such as early notions of gender and desire in Shakespearean drama; sexuality as written by Oscar Wilde; plus, gender fluidity, transgender and non-binary identity in literature.
You will consider the construction of gender identity, sexuality, and gender norms in literary texts from early theatre drama through literary fiction and into modern works that explore feminist theory and gender studies. With a focus on LGBTQ+ narratives, the course maps major developments in fiction writing.
Key concepts will be discussed as a class and by the end of the course, learners will be able to consider the role of literature in formulating theories of gender and sexuality.
You will require access to a device with an internet connection. Recommended and essential reading will be advised by the course tutor once the course is confirmed to run.
