About the course

Join us at the National Museum of Scotland to explore Scotland’s great changes and developments during the Georgian period, from 1714-1815.

Making use of the museum’s collections, you’ll consider the Enlightenment and the growth of universities, the growth of trade, transportation and industry, governance. You’ll look at the impact of Jacobite rebellions and events overseas, from France and Spain to the American colonies.

Any essential or recommended reading will be shared by the course teacher once the course is confirmed to run. You will require access to a device with an internet connection.

What you'll learn

If you have fully engaged with all the learning activities and have attended regularly, by the end of the course, you should be able to:

  • Explain the key social, political, cultural and economic developments in Scotland in this period;  
  • Assess the influence of national and international events on Georgian Scottish society;
  • Analyse historical material in the context of Georgian Scotland. 

Who the course is for

No previous experience is required.

Entry criteria

This course is suitable for those with no prior experience of university study.

You will need to have reading, listening and communication skills, including the ability to understand detailed ideas and information presented verbally and in writing. You must be comfortable learning in English if it is not your first language. You will need basic digital skills, such as using a computer and navigating a website, to access the learning materials.
