Low-tech Printmaking

This course introduces low-tech printmaking approaches that can be undertaken in a domestic setting. From gel-plate image transfer to simple relief methods, the focus is on hands-on experimentation using accessible, eco-friendly materials.

You will explore techniques such as printing with recycled Tetra Paks and mono-printing on gel plates, using found materials to create texture and pattern. All processes are chosen for their low cost, low environmental impact for working at home with minimal equipment.

The course encourages playful, process-led exploration, helping you develop creative skills while producing visually engaging outcomes.

You will be taught in a specialist art studio with practical demonstrations, one-to-one support, and group discussion. Access to an internet-connected device is required for access to materials beyond the class contact time.

Learning in this course is hands-on, with skills developed through practice, experimentation, and engagement with materials and techniques. By fully participating in all learning activities and attending regularly, by the end of the course you should be able to:

• Apply practical knowledge and experience in low-tech printmaking using everyday and recycled materials, including the safe and effective use of tools, equipment, and materials to produce prints sustainably.
• Compose, transfer, and create images using printmaking techniques, following a structured sequence from initial preparation to completed print, while considering eco-friendly approaches and material reuse.
• Apply problem-solving and critical reflection skills to your printmaking practice, managing time, materials, and resources effectively, and adapting to technical or creative challenges. 

This course is for those with little or no experience of printmaking.

Learners with an enthusiasm for creative exploration and making may find this course particularly rewarding. Curiosity about printing techniques, colour and form, and a willingness to experiment and express ideas visually, are encouraged.

This course is suitable for participants with no prior experience. We welcome anyone with a vivid imagination and a passion for creative exploration. While no formal background in art or design or printmaking is required, the course is hands-on, and a willingness to experiment and express ideas visually is encouraged.

There is no recommended reading for this course, only suggested reference materials. Your course teacher will guide you to relevant sources during the sessions and through online resources.

Reading, listening and communication skills are essential. You must be comfortable learning in English. You will need basic digital skills, such as using a computer and navigating a website, to access the learning materials.
