About the course

In this course we will draw your attention to the inequalities faced by students and trainees who find themselves marginalised in education and the impact this has on their inclusion, development, and, ultimately, career progression. We will also consider how we, as educators, might facilitate inclusion and contribute towards building a more equitable environment where learners can thrive. Finally, we will look at inherent bias.

This course is mapped to GMC Framework Area 6 - “Guiding Personal and Professional Development” and can be taken on its own to support your professional development as a clinical educator, or as one of the six courses of the Clinical Educator Programme (CEP), which when completed will provide evidence that you have attained all of the GMC FAs for Supervisors.

The course consists of a single compulsory workshop (online or in person at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh), as well as an online learning component assessed by a quiz that must be a passed, though can be retaken if failed. After clicking “Apply now”, you will be taken to a form that allows you to pick an available workshop. You will then be sent a link to self-enrol onto the course. Workshops run during the month named on the course edition, but the online learning can be begun once you have self-enrolled, if this is earlier, and you will retain access to the course for at least a month afterwards.

What you'll learn

By the end of this course you should be able to:

  • Describe the benefits that a diverse staff and student body can bring to education, the NHS and wider society.
  • Promote diversity and support inclusion within your own teaching, learning and assessment activities.
  • Identify your own biases and manage these in such a way as not to discriminate or exclude others.

Who the course is for

The Clinical Educator Programme (CEP) offers a suite of clinical education courses that are designed to develop the teaching skills of clinicians and academics who teach University of Edinburgh medical students and postgraduate medical trainees in south-east Scotland.
