Themes at the National Galleries of Scotland: Identity

In this course, based at the Scottish National Gallery, we will examine a selection of paintings from a thematic perspective, rather than a conventional historical or biographical on.

The theme we will consider will be Identity and by looking at five key works you will gain new insights into their social and artistic significance.

We will examine and discuss the way the theme of Identity has been portrayed in five major paintings.

Each class will start with an introduction to the painting followed by a group discussion.

Please note, this course takes place in the Scottish National Gallery (meet at the Information Desk at the Gallery). The venue is fully wheelchair accessible. There are portable seats available for learners who would like access to seating during the course.

Any essential or recommended reading will be advised by the course teacher once the course is confirmed to run. You will require access to a computer or other device with internet connection. 

If you have fully engaged with all the learning activities and have attended regularly, by the end of the course you should be able to:

• Identify and discuss a number of artworks reflecting the course’s theme;
• Analyse critically the role of the theme in art from different periods, styles etc;
• Place artworks and their theme in a broader context.

No previous experience is required.

There are no specific entry requirements for this course. Please note that there will be walking involved in this course at the Scottish National Gallery.

You will need to have reading, listening and communication skills, including the ability to understand detailed ideas and information presented verbally and in writing. You must be comfortable learning in English if it is not your first language. You will need basic digital skills, such as using a computer and navigating a website, to access the learning materials.
